If your toilet clogs every once in a while, it may not seem like a big deal. However, if you find yourself dealing with a clogged toilet on a regular basis, there may be an underlying issue.

Here are some of the common reasons why a clogged toilet may be less of an inconvenience and an issue you need a plumber to help with:
- Too much toilet paper—Using excessive amounts of toilet paper is one of the simplest reasons why a toilet can clog. Large amounts of toilet paper may not break down fast enough, especially if you have an older or low-flow toilet. Try using a reasonable amount and flushing more than once when necessary.
- Flushing the wrong things—Toilets are designed to handle human waste and toilet paper. Things like paper towels, wipes, feminine hygiene products, tissues, and other household materials can create stubborn blockages. Even products labeled as “flushable” can still contribute to plumbing problems.
- A partially blocked drain—Sometimes, a toilet will appear to clear after you plunge it. But a partial blockage may still remain farther down the drain. This can cause the toilet to clog over and over again because water and waste can’t move through the pipe properly.
- Problems with the toilet—An older or poorly functioning toilet may not have enough flushing power to move waste through the drain. Mineral buildup around the rim can also interfere with proper flushing.
- A sewer line issue—Frequent clogs can sometimes indicate a more serious issue, such as a blocked sewer line. If multiple drains are backing up or your toilet frequently gurgles, we may need to check out your sewer line.
