Dealing with plumbing problems is often a headache, but knowing where your problems are stemming from can demystify a lot of the concern that comes when you have issues like a leaking toilet. Toilet leaks specifically are one of the more frustrating plumbing-related problems because they can prohibit you from using this very necessary fixture. Below are three of the most common causes behind a leaking toilet that our team sees during our repair jobs.
- Faulty Float: The float rests at the top of the water in your tank. Its job is to monitor the water level within the tank and stop this water from overflowing. A faulty float won’t properly cut off the water supply as the water rises, leading to leaks coming from the tank. If the source of your toilet’s leak is coming from the tank, a faulty float is the most likely culprit.
- Loose or Damaged Mounting Bolts: Mounting bolts are what keep your toilet securely installed onto the floor. Over time, if these bolts become loose or are damaged in any way, a small gap can form between your toilet and your bathroom floor. This can cause a water leak near the base of your toilet.
- Malfunctioning Flapper: Another common culprit behind a leaking toilet is a malfunction flapper. Flappers create a barrier between the toilet bowl and the tank. They limit water flow between these two areas of your toilet and are responsible for making sure water flows from the tank to the bowl after you flush. When the flapper is malfunctioning or is damaged, water flow isn’t controlled properly. This can cause a leak.
