What’s the Right Way to Plunge a Clogged Toilet?

When you end up with a clogged toilet and you have to unclog it, you may reluctantly reach for the plunger, only mildly hopeful that your efforts will work. Although not every clogged toilet can be fixed right away, how you plunge your toilet can make a difference in how quickly you unplug the clog. Here are our top tips for plunging a clogged toilet:

  • When you do your first plunge, make it gentle. If you go in too forcefully, you’ll end up with water all over you.
  • After you’ve done that first plunge, don’t be afraid to push the plunger up and down vigorously. This will help you force water in both directions down the drain, which can help you unstick the clog. In most cases, you’ll have to plunge between 15-20 times.
  • It can take a little while to get a clog unstuck, so be patient. Switch between shorter plunges and more intense plunges to get water flowing again through the pipe.
  • Always keep the plunger covered in enough water. If you try and force air underneath your plunger, you won’t get as much pressure going through the pipe.
